What do you love about summer? One of my favorite things to do is catch up on reading. I always used this as a time to rejuvenate myself as an educator. I would often find a great read to focus on and plan how to implement the strategies the following school year.
We would like to offer the opportunity for you to participate in a web-based book club. All PLA educators are invited to read the book 50 Strategies to Boost Cognitive Engagement by Rebecca Stobaugh. Her book focuses on 50 strategies to boost cognitive engagement so that you can create a thinking culture in your classroom.
Here's How it Will Work~
- Sign up to participate
- Purchase the book~ Amazon offers it for under $23.00
- Link to purchase the book~ 50 Strategies to Boost Cognitive Engagement
- You will receive a schedule for how the reading of the book will be dispersed over the summer
- Participate by blogging and sharing ideas on the topic with other PLA educators
- You can earn 20 PGP points and a certificate at the end of the club for participating and blogging for the entire summer!
Hi Everyone! I just ended my 3rd year as an Instructional/Data Coach withPLA in Indianapolis (103, GVP and next year 48) and my 20th year in Education. I love the Summer Book Club each year with PLA, haven't missed one yet!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about summer is to find a quiet spot (yard, beach, porch) and read or watch one of my favorite summer movies. Tied with reading/movies is my love of hiking and camping. I can't wait to hit Hoosier National this year! Bring on the Cicadas!
I am starting my first year with the PLA family @93 in the fall. I have taught for 3 years in other charter schools in Indy. I am excited to dig into this book and see what I can use in my classroom!
ReplyDeleteI am starting my 3rd year with GVPLA. I will be teaching 3rd grade. Excited to be back in the building working with our awesome team! This year marks my 29th year in Education! So happy to be part of the PLA network! My favorite thing in the summer is spending time reading in my porch swing & watching my tower garden produce tasty veggies & herbs! Summer is such restorative time! I look forward to connecting with everyone! Brenda Shafer, GVPLA

ReplyDeleteI really enjoy the summer. I call it “My do what I want to do time”. This is a time for slowing down for me and reflection. I plan to see people I haven’t seen in awhile. I also called catch up on reading books I haven’t had a chance to finish.
I have participated in all of Phalen’s summer reading. I really enjoy learning new ways to activate children’s learning and keeping them engaged!!

ReplyDeleteSummertime is my favorite time of year. I have spent the last 17 years at a baseball park all summer. I also like to try to catch up on reading love stories and crafting.

ReplyDeleteChapter 1 - Cognitive Engagement and the Thinking Based Classroom: The information provided in this chapter was familiar to me and should be to our classroom teachers because one of our main focus areas during staff meeting and PLC's was Rigor. The scholars should be doing the "work" in the classroom. A quote I shared with the staff: "At the end of the day, teachers should not be the one's worn out." I was glad to see in the chapter ways in which teachers can reflect on their own classrooms by looking at characteristics of Cognitive Classrooms.

Yashikia Willis- TEACHER ASSISTANT PLA@93

ReplyDeleteTynesia Bowe- HS English Teacher The Bowman Leadership Academy is in the building! I love the summer sun giving energy to everything. Being able to relax, creatively plan, and take care of things I would never be able to during the school year (LOL).
ReplyDeleteHello, everyone! I'm Megan Denton, and I am the Media Specialist at PLA @ 48. During summer break, I enjoy spending time with my mama and brother in southern Indiana, working on my tan, and decorating my planner for the next year.
ReplyDeleteSummer is a time to reflect on the school year just completed, and plan for the upcoming year, using the lessons learned.
ReplyDeleteOh, and sleep a little later, too. :)
Heather Burch - 2nd grade PLA@103
ReplyDeleteSummers are my time to reconnect with friends and family as well as spending time to recharge for the next school year. This summer will be a little more interesting with my 5 month old in the mix. ☺️
Cathy @ PLA Main Preparatory-Akron
ReplyDeleteI started my summer by participating in a month long Virtual Miniseries, What is Social Justice Teaching in the Science Classroom? presented by NSTA. Once completed, I will enjoy spending time with family and friends at our camper near Lake Erie, Ohio.
Hi Cathy! Your summer miniseries sounds amazing! Are you enjoying it so far?
DeleteHi Amanda,
DeleteI'm so excited to meet a colleague. The NSTA miniseries is pretty good. The presenters and participants are sharing so many resources. I hope to capture a few of those through the recordings and chat spaces.
Hello! My name is Amanda Pyles and I will be starting at Main Preparatory Academy in Akron this fall. I have spent the last school year long-term subbing and am excited to have my own classroom! I think summer is a time to relax and unwind from the school year. I also think it is a time to reflex and start prepping for the next school year.
ReplyDeleteHello all! I am Alissa Davis, I teacher first at PLA@48! I like to spend time with my family during the summer and hopefully sneak in a vacation when I'm able (hence my late start to this Book Club--after an illness and then vacation I'm hoping to catch up this week!) :)
ReplyDeleteI want to do more with vocabulary. So the strategy that I want to try is Ten Most Important Words. It helps the struggling find meaning in the words, helps higher levels increase their vocabulary skills and helps the students to see that words do have meaning.
ReplyDeleteUsing this stragety would help implement a PD I attended about vocabulary in the classroom. Scholars need to use/see/hear/work with a word up to 40 times before it sticks in their brains and becomes part of their own vocabulary.

DeleteHi my name is Jensen Cacciola! I am a Fourth grade Math teacher. Last year was my first year in PLA and coming back into teaching after two years of being a stay at home mom with my two children. This will be my third year of teaching so I am excited to relax at home, go places with family and friends and sleep. I am so ready for a "normal" summer. We just moved into a new house and planning our wedding for next summer.
ReplyDeletePLA-Jones-Clark
Jensen, good luck with being back at school! I am sure it will be hard to leave your kiddos. Hoping for a smooth transition for all! Congrats on your new house & the wedding! I recently found out that a childhood friend & my brother barely missed their weddings coinciding, (a week apart next year.) I had a mini panic attack when I found out!
